No fruit starts arguments in India quite like jackfruit. Some people count down the days until the first one is cracked open at home. Others leave the room because of the smell. We're firmly in the first camp, and we think jackfruit ice cream might be the thing that converts the second.
Meet the jackfruit
Jackfruit is the largest tree fruit in the world, and a single one can weigh more than a small child. Inside the spiky green skin are dozens of golden, waxy bulbs wrapped around large seeds. Ripe bulbs are intensely sweet and fragrant, with a flavour people describe as a mix of banana, pineapple and mango, and a texture that's pleasantly chewy.
It's grown all over South India, and every region has its own jackfruit traditions, from sweets and chips to curries made with the unripe fruit.
A summer fruit with a short window
Jackfruit season arrives with the heat, usually from around March to July. For a few months the markets are full of whole fruits and trays of cleaned bulbs. Then it's gone until next year. That's why our Jackfruit pop follows the season rather than sitting on the menu all year.
Why jackfruit makes great ice cream
That big tropical sweetness is perfect for a frozen dessert. Cold dulls flavour, and jackfruit has flavour to spare. Blended with milk, the pulp turns silky and rich, and the fruit's natural sweetness means it needs very little help. The result is a creamy, golden pop that tastes unmistakably of ripe jackfruit, without the stickiness of cleaning one yourself.
The best part of jackfruit, minus the sticky hands and the knife.
Jackfruit ice cream vs our Jackfruit pop
If you've been searching for jackfruit ice cream in Hyderabad, our pop is the same idea in a different shape. Like any good natural ice cream, it's made from real fruit and milk. Instead of being churned and scooped, it's frozen on a stick, which keeps the flavour cleaner and makes it easier to enjoy on the go. As always, it's just real ingredients: jackreal fruit and milk.
A flavour for the curious
If you've never liked jackfruit, try it frozen. The smell that puts people off is much softer when the fruit is cold and blended with milk, and what's left is pure tropical sweetness. If you already love it, you'll probably want two.
