Hyderabad summers are serious. From April to June the city regularly crosses 40°C, and by mid-afternoon the only reasonable response is something cold. Here's our (slightly biased) guide to beating the heat, the Hyderabadi way.
The classics
Qubani ka meetha
Hyderabad's signature dessert: dried apricots stewed until jammy, often served with cream or ice cream. Rich and sweet, and best after a biryani on a slightly cooler evening.
Double ka meetha
Fried bread soaked in saffron-scented milk. Glorious, but not exactly light.
Falooda
Rose syrup, milk, vermicelli, basil seeds and a scoop of ice cream in a tall glass. A proper summer treat.
Kulfi
Dense, slow-melting and perfect after a late dinner. We explain how it differs from ice cream in our frozen treats guide.
The lighter options
When it's 42°C at 3 PM, heavy sweets feel like a mistake. That's when fruit-based treats win.
- Fruit sorbet pops. Real fruit, fresh and hydrating. Try Lemon Mint or Watermelon.
- Creamy fruit pops. Fruit and milk, lighter than ice cream. Alphonso Mango is the summer headliner.
- Tender coconut. The city's favourite cooler, also available as a creamy pop.
At 3 PM in May, the best dessert is the one that cools you down, not the one that sends you to sleep.
Seasonal summer picks
Summer is mango season, so this is the time for Alphonso. As the monsoon approaches, watch for kala jamun.
Ice cream in Hyderabad: scoop or stick?
Hyderabad has no shortage of ice cream parlours, from the old family favourites to the newer natural ice cream chains known for sitaphal and tender coconut. So where does a popsicle fit in? Think of it as the lighter, more portable cousin. A scoop is for sitting down after dinner. A pop is for the drive home, the walk through the market or the break between meetings, when you want something cold that won't melt all over your hands in two minutes.
Keeping cool without the crash
Heavy, milk-rich desserts can leave you sleepy on a hot day. Fruit-based treats do the opposite. A sorbet pop is mostly fruit and water, so it cools you down quickly and feels refreshing rather than heavy. On the hottest days we'd pick Lemon Mint or Watermelon + Pineapple. If you want something richer, Tender Coconut is creamy but still light.
Summer at home
Keep a box of pops in the freezer through April and May and you'll never be caught out by surprise guests, bored kids or a power cut that turns your afternoon into a sauna. We deliver them cold, and orders placed before 4 PM go out the same day in Hyderabad.
