Frozen dessert vs ice cream in India: why the label matters

By House of Pops · 28 September 2026 · 2 min read

Why some tubs in India say "frozen dessert" instead of "ice cream", what the difference is, and how to spot it on a label before you buy.

Frozen dessert vs ice cream

Next time you're at a supermarket freezer, look closely at the tubs. Some say "ice cream". Others, in much smaller print, say "frozen dessert". They look the same, they're priced similarly, and they are not the same thing.

The difference, in one sentence

Ice cream is made with milk fat. Frozen dessert is made with vegetable oil or fat. Under India's food safety rules, a product that swaps milk fat for vegetable fat can't call itself ice cream, so it has to be labelled "frozen dessert" or "frozen confection".

Why brands use vegetable fat

Vegetable fat is cheaper than milk fat and more stable in storage. It lets a brand hit a lower price or a longer shelf life. There's nothing illegal about it, as long as the label is honest.

"Frozen dessert" isn't a warning. It's a description. You just deserve to know which one you're paying for.

How to check in five seconds

  • Look at the product name on the front and back. "Frozen dessert" or "frozen confection" means vegetable fat.
  • Read the ingredients for "edible vegetable oil", "vegetable fat" or specific oils like palm.
  • Check for milk fat or cream if you're expecting ice cream.

Where do popsicles fit in?

Popsicles can be either, or neither. A fruit sorbet pop has no fat at all. A creamy pop might use milk, cream or vegetable fat. Again, the label tells the story.

What we use

Our creamy pops and specials are made with milk. No vegetable fat, no palm oil. Our fruity pops are made with real fruit, with no fat and no dairy. We keep it to real ingredients for exactly this reason: nothing to hide in the small print.

Why this matters for kids and families

Many families buy tubs for the week without checking the label, assuming every tub is ice cream. Knowing the difference lets you choose what you actually want to serve at home. If milk-based desserts are important to you, the label is where you find out.

Popsicles and ice lollies in India

The same principle applies to ice pops and ice lollies. Some are real fruit, some are coloured syrup, and some are creamy pops made with vegetable fat. Reading the first real ingredients tells you almost everything.

Real milk. Real fruit.

Try the difference in a creamy pop.

The takeaway

Neither product is dangerous. But if you want dairy, you should get dairy, and if you're paying for ice cream, it should be ice cream. A quick look at the label is all it takes. For the rest of the label, here's what "natural" should mean.

Frequently asked

It isn't unsafe, but it's a different product. Many people prefer milk-based ice cream, and it's worth knowing which one you're buying.
